Michael Adler, Lawyer for Viola Davis & Steven Soderbergh, Dies at 73

After a brief illness, the retired partner of Lichter Grossman Nichols Adler Feldman & Clark, Michael Adler passed away on November 9 at his Los Angeles home in the company of his family. He was 73.

After graduating from UCLA Law School and serving as a partner at Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp for five years, Adler joined then-Lichter Grossman & Nichols in 1997. Adler was known as a straight shooter who was extremely devoted to his clients, with a client list that includes Steven Soderbergh, Viola Davis, Kristin Scott Thomas, Cary Joji Fukunaga, and Connie Nielsen, among many others.

Adler has worked on projects like the financing and distribution of the Soderbergh-directed film Magic Mike, which he did without sarcasm.

To guarantee a smooth transition, Adler spent a lot of time before retiring in 2019 transferring his clients to the firm’s younger partners.

Dr. Brenda Fabe, Adler’s wife, his children Jeremy and Rachel Adler, their spouses Susan Smith and Jonah King, and four grandchildren all survive him.

Adler’s funeral will be conducted at Mount Sinai Simi Valley on November 11 at 12:30 p.m.

Five years after the company’s founding, in 1997, Adler joined what was then Lichter Grossman & Nichols, and the company said he remained “an absolutely integral part” of it until his retirement in 2019.

Colleague’s tribute to Michael Adler.

“Throughout his career, he was a fearless and tenacious advocate for his clients, who included some of the most celebrated actors, writers, directors, and producers in the film and television industries,” it noted. “His clients meant the world to him.

“He was a brilliant attorney and a real mentor to so many of the lawyers at our firm and in the larger entertainment law community over the years. He had awful handwriting and told terrible jokes. Above all, Mike was a mensch — a truly kind and generous partner and friend.”

Over the years, he collaborated closely with other well-known LGNAFC customers as Sacha Gervasi, Vincent Landay, Connie Nielsen, Tom Bergeron, Kristin Scott Thomas, David Magee, Frank Doelger, and Eric Balfour.

Adler worked as a partner at Mitchell Silberberg & Knupp before joining Lichter Grossman & Nichols after earning his law degree from UCLA and serving as a legal clerk for Mathew Tobriner of the California Supreme Court and William Enright of the U.S. District Court.
